Hi all,
Since I am no longer "lurking" on this list but actively involved in at
least trying to solve the missing message mysteries, I should at least
introduce myself. I work on the content of the SLINCS site at
http://slincs.coe.utk.edu/, the Workforce Education Special Collection
site at
http://slincs.coe.utk.edu/special_collections/workforce_education/, and
the Learning Activities Bank at http://slincs.coe.utk.edu/gtelab/
I am also the white adoptive parent of two now grown black children. I
like to think that I would be as interested in and knowledgeable about
race issues especially in education without the experience of having
raised and lobbied for the rights of my own children, but I'm sure it
isn't so. I now have grandchildren to advocate for, and I know that this
will help me to keep my awareness and my interest in racism and how it is
manifested in our society alive. Even as aware and as interested as I
have been for the last 30 years, I am still surprised when I again realize
prejudices in myself. I consciously try to remain aware and recognize
them. I think that awareness is the key, though, and that we have to try
to remain sensitized to manifestations of prejudice and racism wherever we
recognize them and then proactively respond. I'm not a confrontational
person by instinct, so I always have to work at it when confrontation is
called for by overt or covert racism.
I am finding strength in knowing how many of you are also struggling with
these problems. Thanks to you all for being willing to open up and share
your thinking! Only good can come of this exchange!
