Both were placed in the context of K-12 education, and I wonder what that tells us about adult literacy education. I know there are studies and theoretical writings about this; how often are they part of our graduate education and our work within the field of adult education? I received a forwarded message that highlighted the tension some of us perceive in the emphasis placed on preparing low-income students for work, specifically for entry-level jobs (is it an entry-level job if there's no possibility of advancement, by the way?)It looked like it was posted to the list as well but I haven't seen it show up there. I hope it will be posted to the list. Kathleen, in your message, especially, your unhappiness and frustration with the emphasis on "learning to follow the rules" seemed pretty clear. I guess my question is really, what do we want our purpose to be? After all, we commit a lot of time and energy to our work--beyond the purpose we may feel are imposed upon us, and with which we may agree or not (or not question enough to come to a position of agreement or disagreement), what do WE see as our purpose(s)? _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web.
