We grieve for those affected by this tragedy and are thankful whenever we are able to confirm that members of the literacy community are safe and well. After some discussion, we have decided to proceed with the conference in Albuquerque, Oct. 17-20. We cannot allow these attacks to prevent us from accomplishing our mission. Going ahead with the conference says, in a small way, that we will not live in fear, and that we will continue with work that we know is important and that changes people's lives for the good of all. In addition to the conference workshops and events, merger-related news and other items of interest will be announced at plenary sessions. Staff and Board leadership from Laubach Literacy International -- a conference partner this year -- will be available to answer your questions about their organization. DSW partners, the marketing/branding firm that is conducting research in order to assist us to arrive at a new name for the new, merged organization will make a presentation at the General Session on Friday morning and will conduct discussion groups throughout the week. Our keynote speakers, author Barbara Hambly and Dr. Randolph Smoak of the American Medical Association, will be there as planned to inspire and energize us. Christy Gullion, a public policy analyst with the National Institute for Literacy, will conduct focus groups to discuss a new Omnibus Literacy Bill that the National Coalition for Literacy has drafted so that you will be able to give the Coalition the benefit of your input. A record number of exhibitors will also be on hand this year. LVA's other conference partners will also be there: Dale Lipshultz and others from the American Library Association, Ron Pugsley from the US Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education, David Godsted and others from the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. If you have not yet registered for the conference, do it today! There will be NO late registration fees charged this year. A downloadable registration form is available at http://www.literacyvolunteers.org/conference/2001/register.html. Fax it to LVA's conference manager, Peggy May, at 843-671-5670, or mail it to LVA, Inc., PO Box 3064, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928. Please join us in Albuquerque and celebrate the joys and accomplishments of LVA, our conference partners, and the literacy field. ****************************************************** Nothing great was ever accomplished without enthusiasm. ~~Ralph Waldo Emerson ****************************************************** Marsha L.
