Health ILLITERACY is a great worry here in the Rio Grande Valley, with so
many nonEnglish-speaking and undereducated people. I believe your proposed
program would be perfect for the San Juan Community Center (when the
building is renovated), in broad partnership with the other health programs
mentioned and with my literacy nonprofit that tries to "fill in the cracks"
by publicizing all adult and family literacy opportunities in Hidalgo
County, quarterly, as well as providing yeararound literacy opportunities
for those who aren't eligible for other programs or who can't get the help
they need elsewhere. The small city of San Juan, stretching to give us
program funding, is especially interested in supporting health education and
any services possible. The nonprofit doctors' organizations we've already
contacted are game to be part of the Center, but they want us to run the
program, and they will show up and do their thing. We've been thinking in
terms of monthly visits, screening, health education meetings, health fairs,
etc. (The psychologists's group is all ready to go, and their office is
nearly finished.)

You can see that your proposition is just exactly what we need..

Peg Oliver.
