In a chapter by Decklan Fox from NYPL for the book, Literacy and Libraries:
Learning from Case Studies, he discusses using theme-based lesson plans for
a literacy program. One of their most successful was a health and wellness
curriculum. Learners were asked to discuss what a healthy diet is and how
important exercise was to them. They were then asked to bring nutrition
labels to class for their reading exercise. I thought this was a great idea
in that it shows the learners how literacy pervades everything, not just
getting a better job, but in everyday things like what to have for dinner.
