Background on the Initiative:
In the mid-1990s, the United Nations Cairo and Beijing conferences
recognized sexual and reproductive rights as human rights, emphasizing
womenıs rights to make reproductive decisions free of discrimination,
coercion, and violence. This initiative recognizes that sexual and
reproductive health/rights for women and their families can only be achieved
through a holistic approach which includes the:
Right to adequate housing and community development;
Right to quality healthcare and information;
Right to be free from violence;
Right to determine if, when and how often to have a child;
Right to satisfying and safe sex;
Right to earn a livable wage in a supportive work environment; and
Right to be free from environmental hazards, etc.

This Ford Foundation initiative will explore innovative advocacy within this
broader framework to include a spectrum of issues which disproportionately
impact women of color. These issues include interpersonal and intimate
partner violence, environmental justice, welfare reform, economic
development, mental health, child welfare, poverty, access to health
services, HIV/AIDS, STDs, drug testing of pregnant women, hospital mergers
and Temporary Aid Needy Families (TANF) reauthorization.

Goals:
The goals of the Ford Foundation initiative are to:
*strengthen the capacity of a cross-cultural collective of women of color
community-based organizations;
*support their local efforts; and
*bring their knowledge, experiences, needs and desires to the U.S. sexual
and reproductive health/rights movement to reflect the voices of all women.

Projects should develop strategies for local advocacy to advance a sexual
and reproductive health/rights issue and use these strategies to foster
connections across multiple issues using innovative approaches that build
collaboratives and coalitions.

guidelines and application, call MCR Consulting at 1-800-211-4596.
