FYI:

The National Center on Education Statistics (NCES) has just released the
following two new publications:

"The Persistence of Employees Who Pursue College Study" uses data from the
base year and first follow-up surveys of the 1995-96 Beginning Postsecondary
Students Longitudinal Study to examine the persistence and completion rates
of students who define themselves primarily as "employees who decided to
enroll in school." These "employees who study" were found
to have persistence rates similar to those of other students when their goal
did not involve obtaining a postsecondary credential, or when their goal was
to obtain a postsecondary certificate. Among those seeking an associate's
degree or higher degree, however, "employees who study" had lower
persistence rates than their peers. Differences in the backgrounds
and life situations of "employees who study" may help account for these
differences in persistence.

"Participation Trends and Patterns in Adult Education: 1991 to 1999" uses
data from the 1991, 1995, and 1999 Adult Education Surveys of the National
Household Education Surveys Program to examine participation rates in adult
education over time. Participation is examined among different groups of
adults (by age, sex, race/ethnicity, education level, labor force status,
occupation group, and whether the adult has continuing education
requirements), and for different types of adult education (adult basic
education, English as a Second Language programs, credential programs,
apprenticeship programs, work-related courses, and nonwork-related courses).
For work-related courses and nonwork-related courses in 1999, a multivariate
statistical analysis was used to help reveal the socio-demographic
determinants of participation in these
activities.
