Subject: An Invitation and Call for the Western Conference on The Study =
of Adult Education=20

The following Invitation and Call is distributed to NAAPAE Networks to =
promote
connections between our members and other groups that are part of our =
networks.

An Invitation and Call for Papers or Discussion Groups=20
Western Conference on The Study of Adult Education=20
LEADERSHIP AND ADULT EDUCATION=20
April 26-28, 2002, Faculty of Education,=20
University of Victoria, British Columbia

AN INVITATION: WHAT, WHEN AND WHERE=20
This is a reminder about the Western Conference titled "Leadership and =
Adult Education" that will take place at the Faculty of Education, =
University of Victoria, April 26-28, 2002.=20
Re-thinking the idea of leadership in and through adult education is a =
timely one. We are living in a very challenging and perplexing era as a =
result of globalisation and corporatision, 'stream-lined' economic =
policy, institutional downsizing, and infringements on our rights and =
freedoms. In working for social and environmental change, we continually =
face challenges, frustrations, ambiguity, and even chaos. Questions we =
can ask ourselves include: What is the relationship between adult =
education, leadership and social change?; What are the characteristics =
of this new era and what are the implications for adult education =
leaders in communities, colleges and universities?; What types of =
leadership and roles do we now play and will we need to play in the =
future?; Are there intersections between adult education theory and =
practice and leadership theory and practice that can help us find our =
way?=20

PAPER OR DISCUSSION GROUP=20
In order to make this conference as accessible as possible to students =
and community people, you have the choice of either delivering a formal =
paper or facilitating an informal discussion group around a topic that =
you suggest. A formal paper may present research completed or in =
progress, analysis of an issue, a model, or theoretical discussion from =
the literature. You are asked to bring copies of your paper to the =
presentation, and to leave plenty of time for dialogue. An informal =
discussion group could focus on a particular issue in theory, research, =
policy or practice related to leadership in adult education. Your =
facilitation of an informal discussion group should open with an =
overview of the issue and its background, your personal interest and =
engagement with the issue, and some discussion starters (perhaps =
questions or a short text for audience consideration).=20
Either format may engage with the following areas in relation to =
leadership and adult education: university, college or =
non-formal/community education settings, anti-racism, citizenship, =
employment/unemployment, environment, gender equity, =
housing/homelessness, health, human rights, labour, literacy/language, =
land and self-governance, mass media, multiculturalism, =
training/learning/skilling, the arts, trade unionism, violence, war and =
peace, welfare/poverty, and workplace. Other ideas/areas are also =
welcome! All paper and discussion group gatherings will be 30 minutes in =
length to accommodate all who wish to present.=20
Please send a proposal stating the following information:
1. Your choice of format: Formal Paper or Discussion Group=20
2. The Title=20
3. A brief (maximum 250-words) abstract describing the argument or =
research presented in the Formal Paper, or the outlining the topic area =
and some discussion questions for the Discussion Group.=20
4. Your contact information: Name; Institutional Affiliation (if =
applicable); Student status (if applicable); Mailing Address; =
Telephone/Fax; and Email address.
Proposals must be received via email by February 20, 2002. Emails should =
be sent to both Darlene Clover (clover@uvic.ca) and Tara Fenwick =
(tara.fenwick@ualberta.ca). Please send proposals in the body of the =
text rather than using attachments due to the incompatibility of =
computer programmes.

CONFERENCE FEES AND REGISTRATION=20
The conference fee is $40.00 per person. This cost covers refreshments, =
a reception and a conference dinner at a local Chinese Restaurant. To =
obtain a registration form contact Darlene at clover@uvic.ca (in rich =
text format). The registration form must be received by March 15, 2002 =
(Registrations after March 15 are $50.00 per person).=20
Please complete the form, include your cheque or money order made =
payable to the University of Victoria and post it to:
