Are you ready for a transformative and deep experience in education and
social justice?

The Institute for Community Leadership and the Washington Service Corps
announce two new AmeriCorps positions beginning Fall 2002.

PROJECT TITLE:  Coaching Peace with Justice:  Fostering Democracy
Schools

PROJECT HOST: The Institute for Community Leadership; Seattle, WA

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

The Institute for Community Leadership (ICL) works across the country in
schools and communities is committed to providing young people with the
conduct, character and consciousness they need to create better and
strong communities.  Through innovative curriculum tools and dynamic
community events, the Institute engages young people in struggles
against racism, sexism, meanness and meaninglessness.  Utilizing
nonviolence, poetry and community advocacy, we provide young people with
the foundation for action.

The AmeriCorps position is responsible for the deployment of ICL's
Leadership Poetry Workshop curriculum across the state of Washington.
Related duties include home and family visits, planning community
events, assist in office management and manage relationships with
teachers and administrators. Members will also participate in the
National Youth Nonviolence Leadership Institute.

DESCRIPTION OF DAILY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*        Organize and present life transforming school based Leadership
Poetry Workshops

*        Attend ICL staff meetings and Coaching sessions

*        Actively participate on a team of multi-racial youth and adults
committed to fostering democracy schools

*        Help create ties and promote family involvement in personal and
social change

*        Assist in developing the capacity of teachers to promote social
change in schools

*        Plan dynamic and thought provoking community events for
students

*        Assist in building relationships with school and district
personnel

*        Various office duties, including answering the phone and
working on mailings

*        Participate in advanced nonviolence sessions with youth and
adults

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

*         An interest and commitment to providing service to the
community;

*         Must be 18-25 years  old and a U.S. citizen or permanent
resident;

*         Strong interest in social justice, education and youth.

*         Possess a willingness to sacrifice and serve for social
justice

DESIRED SKILLS FOR THIS POSITION:

*         Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team;

*         Willingness and ability to work with people from diverse
backgrounds and experiences;

*         Self- starter and able to take initiative with sometimes
limited supervision and direction;

*         Dedication and commitment to 11 months of service;

*         Coachability (the ability to receive coaching on ways to
improve)

*         Ability to be other-interested

*         Desire for challenge

*         Willingness to be out of your comfort zone

HOURS OF WORK:

AmeriCorps Members make a commitment to participate full-time for 11
months   (averaging at least 40 hours per week).

Washington Service Corps members will also be expected to participate in
the National Youth Nonviolence Leadership Institute sessions which can
range from 4 days to six weeks in duration.  Members will work with site
coordinator to determine availability.
