Hi, Everyone:

This purpose of this message is to inform you that, beginning June 18, NIFL
plans to activate an automatic filter on this listserv (and on all NIFL
listservs). The filter will protect us all from computer viruses
transmitted by e-mail. The filter has been tested on the NIFL-ESL list and
has had good results.

Please Note: The filter requires that all messages be posted in PLAIN TEXT.
In addition, it will reject any messages that have attachments. The
following message from the NIFL system/list administrator provides further
detail:

"The test of the attachment filter being used on the NIFL-ESL discussion
list has gone well. The filter has caught, as of last Friday (6/14), 34
potentially virus infected messages and stopped them from being distributed
to the list membership. There were six additional messages with potentially
virus infected attachments caught over the weekend.

Based on these results NIFL has directed that the filter be implemented on
all discussion lists.

File attachments will no longer be allowed through the discussion lists once
the filter is in place. The filter will also enforce the "plain text
messages only" rule. Email messages sent as MIME attachments or HTML mail
will be rejected (these types of emails include the message body as an
attachment...hence the filter rejects them). If list members send messages
as or with attachments they will receive a notice from the list server
advising them that attachments are not permitted and that they should resend
their messages as "plain text" messages.

Implementation of this filter will greatly reduce the possibility of virus
infected messages being passed through the discussion lists. It will
similarly reduce the possibility of virus infected messages being part of
the archives.

Please note that virus infected messages currently do exist in the list
server archives. If users have their subscriptions set to DIGEST format
they may receive infected messages when the next digest format message is
sent from the list server so they should beware. Once the filter is in
place infected messages shouldn't make it into the list server archives (or
the on-line HTML archives for that matter). We will attempt to remove the
infected messages from the list server archive."

Any questions: Please contact me off the list at macorley1@earthlink.net

Thanks!
