FYI:

The following is cross-posted from another list that I belong to. Thought
it might be of interest: it's a summary of research on how schools/teachers
can understand and engage Latino parents.

ENGAGING LATINO PARENTS IN IMPROVING SCHOOL CLIMATE & STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
There are many causes for low academic achievement and high dropout rates
among Latino students, such as language barriers, low expectations of
teachers, poverty, racism, and isolation. The lack of cooperation between
school, parents, and community has also played a role. Over the last two
decades white parents have shown increasing parental participation, while
minorities have decreased the contact they have with their children's
schools. Decreases in parent involvement are of particular concern since
research has provided evidence that there is a link between parent
involvement and academic achievement. Read about the barriers to involvement
and the engagement strategies that have been successful.
