Dear Friends,
Rethinking Schools extends to us a special invitation to participate in
some truly unique teacher training opportunities:
On Thursday, July 25, in Milwaukee, Rethinking Schools editors will
lead day-long institutes on two of Rethinking Schools' most popular books:
-- Rethinking Globalization: Teaching for Justice in an Unjust World
(led by Bill Bigelow and Bob Peterson)
and
-- Reading, Writing, and Rising Up: Teaching about Social Justice and
the Power of the Written Word (led by Linda Christensen)
The institutes are designed for teachers -- elementary through
post-secondary -- and will be held on Thursday, July 25, the day prior to
the National Coalition of Education Activists conference, "Reclaiming Our
Children's Education: United Families, Schools, and Communities". The
institutes are inexpensive and well worth the time.
The NCEA conference will be held at the Milwaukee Area Technical College,
Thursday evening July 25 through Sunday, July 28, 2002. The conference
brings together a multiracial grouping of activist teachers, parents and
community organizers. It is one of the most exciting educational conferences
around, with a focus on social and racial justice.
Details on the institutes:
* Critical Literacy: Reading, Writing and Social Justice.
Linda Christensen, after 23 years as a classroom teacher, now
coordinates Language Arts for Portland (OR) Public Schools and directs the
Portland Writing Project. She is a Rethinking Schools editor and author of
"Reading, Writing, and Rising Up: Teaching about Social Justice and the
Power of the Written Word."
Participants will engage in hands-on activities designed to create
classrooms that foster critical literacy skillls, including "reading the
world." Participants will discuss curricula and teaching methods that speak
to students at different levels and contribute to democratic academic
achievement, as well as investigate strategies for drawing on parents as
resources in their children's education. Teachers of all levels are invited
but the session will be most applicable for grades three through adult ed.
Participants will receive a copy of Christensen's book.
Times: 9 AM to 4 PM
Registration fee: $40.
* Rethinking Globalization: Teaching for Justice in an Unjust World
The institute is based on the new book of the same name co-edited by
Bill Bigelow and Bob Peterson. The institute will feature role plays and
other participatory learning activities that show how to engage students in
thinking critically about "globalization." Topics covered will include free
trade, child labor, sweatshops, conflicts between "progress" and indigenous
cultures, and global institutions such as the World Trade Organization.
Participants will receive a copy of Rethinking Globalization.
Times: 9 AM to 4 PM
Registration fee: $40.
To register for the institutes or for the conference as whole, and for
information on lodging and other related issues. go to
http://www.nceaonline.org or call 845-876-4580.
