Call for Papers---Papers are being solicited for a May 8 and 9, 2003,
conference on health policy and the underserved in Washington, DC.

Conference Theme:
In 2000, 39 million Americans were without health insurance for the entire
year. A number of studies have found that the uninsured get less care and
have worse health outcomes than those with insurance. Even many of those
with some insurance lacked coverage for important components of health care
or received inadequate care. This conference will examine a wide range of
issues related to the lack of insurance and access to health care. We
welcome submissions from the social science disciplines on a wide range of
topics. These topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

. Why are individuals uninsured and underinsured?
. What are the causes of gender and race differences and other disparities
in health?
. What do the uninsured do for health care, and what are the health
consequences of that care?
. How is care for the uninsured financed, and what are the effects of these
costs on the health care system?
. What has been the effect of policy changes such as SCHIP and small group
and individual health insurance reforms?
. What are potential reforms to the current system?
. What are the political forces shaping health policy?
. What can we learn from historical attempts in the U.S. and in other
countries to provide health care for their citizens?
