Thanks to Mary Ann for these references.  I hope they go out to all literacy listservs, with the added info that taking the poverty tour (referred to at the end of the first paragraph) would be a wonderful exercise for a literacy and/or math class.  There is a small amount of text on the screen--we watch as the income of a family disappears before our eyes when the average costs for rent, food, transportation, child care and health are deducted.
