(AACAA) is spear-heading a walking tour of the Underground Railroad (UGRR) station stops in New Milford, CT. The tour will take place on Saturday, September 6, 2003, beginning the walk at the New Milford High School and starting walk at 7:45 a.m ending at 2pm. The Underground Railroad (UGRR) or Freedom Train was a way in which enslaved freedom-seekers used to escape slavery. Their routes were many and varied. They often traveled in disguise, through woods and farms, by foot, wagon, boat and train, hiding in stables and attics and store-rooms, and fleeing through secret passages, caves and tunnels. The destination they sought was always freedom. AACAA, Inc. is a non-profit cultural arts organization committed to its mission to share and educate others about the culture of Africa and the African-American diaspora. The purpose of organizing this UGRR Walking Tour, is to document authentic sites and artifacts for inclusion in the National Parks and Services Underground Railroad Network and the CT Historic Commissions Freedom Trail. This tour will also bring to New Milford's historic memory of the spirit of Unity and Freedom expressed by those freedom supporters and freedom seekers. Another goal of A.A.C.A.A. is to preserve African-American history and culture in New Milford. We invite the entire communities near and far to come and partner with us on this tour as we share and make history together.
