Early childhood / language / literacy VISTA
Our project is located in Delaware and Chenango Counties, Upstate NY.
Five VISTA volunteers will assist 15 rural school districts and their
communities to develop and implement research-based strategies to
improve school readiness of approximately 4,000 low income children,
ages birth to ten, with special emphasis on children's language and
literacy development. Your skills are needed to help us achieve the
following:
* Identify existing services and resources and work with community
agency representatives to assess local needs.
* Initiate or expand the Welcome Baby Project, a system for
identifying newborns in each school district, and establishing
supportive and ongoing contact between the school district and the
baby's family.
* Develop print resources on components of quality early childhood
education, child care and parenting, for use by educators, service
providers and parents.
* Establish a training and information system based on research and
best practice in the area of literacy and language development.
* Establish systems to engage parents, school personnel, local
volunteers and community service providers in activities which
support and ensure student success.
* Collect, analyze and report local data related to Outcomes and
Indicators of Child and Family Well-Being.
* Develop a website which will provide information on available
services to children and families in all 15 school districts.
* Increase public awareness on the need to support pre-literacy and
language development initiatives.
