Literacy Volunteers of America Announces National Conference Literacy
Volunteers of America, Inc.'s (LVA) annual national conference, Nashville in
'99: Hitting the High Notes of Literacy, will be held on November 10-13,
1999 at the Sheraton Music City Center in Nashville, TN.  Our conference
partners are the United States Department of Education Office of Vocational
and Adult Education, The National Council of State Directors of Adult
Education, and NashvilleRead, Inc.  The conference will bring together
literacy professionals, volunteers, students, tutors, funders and
policy-makers for networking and workshops on literacy issues.  Keynote
speaker at the opening session on Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. will be best selling
author Jerry Bledsoe.  Cal Turner, Jr., President of General Dollar Stores,
Inc., will receive this year's Literacy Leadership Award on Nov. 11 at 7
p.m., and "Famous" Wally Amos will celebrate his twentieth anniversary as
LVA Spokesman.   Friday's luncheon on Nov. 12 features former Congresswoman
Pat Schroeder, now president and chief executive officer of the Association
of American Publishers.
Workshop topics include using technology for programs, tutors and students;
training program staff and trainers; learning disabilities; fundraising;
advocating for policy change; marketing and public relations; and more.
Limited openings are also still available for preconference workshops in
volunteer recruitment and management, the Equipped for the Future
Initiative, family literacy, and technology.   But act quickly-space is
limited!
Conference sponsors include Ben and Jerry's, Fannie Mae Foundation, GTE
Foundation, Lucent Technologies, PARADE/react magazines, Philip Morris
Companies, US Airways and Values.com.
Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. is a national, not-for-profit
organization, managed by professionals, which assists adults and their
families to acquire literacy skills through a network of more than 50,000
volunteers nationwide. The LVA network consists of more than 363 community
programs in 40 states and the District of Columbia in which volunteers are
trained to tutor adults and their families.
