Thought folks might find the project of interest. This project is an offshoot of an ongoing partnership between Highline and the university which Bill mentions in the message. Reply directly to him. Box 98000 Des Moines, WA 98198-9800 206-878-3710, ext. 3373 Subject: China Project Contact: Bill Hofmann, P.O. Box 46533, Seattle, WA 98146 or eddie_tor@msn.com Chinese teachers and students of English want to know more about the United States. They are distrustful and/or disturbed when they read stories about the Columbine killings or the lack of medical care for the elderly. They want to know about our food, our vacations, and our legal system. They trust the American public’s responses more than the media. Professor Mao Ronggui of Jiao Tong University in Shanghai publishes a magazine for students of English. His readers send him hundreds of questions about American culture, language, and attitudes. Professor Mao will publish 50 of their questions and 150 responses (3 or 4 responses per question) by American educators and professionals. I am Bill Hofmann, retired professor of humanities from Highline Community College. Professor Mao has asked me to solicit your responses to the Chinese letters and forward them to him via e-mail for publication in the book he plans to issue in the spring of 2000. If any teacher or staff member is willing to write a response for the book, please contact me via e-mail at eddie_tor@msn.com or at Box 46533, Westwood Station, Seattle, WA 98146. I will send the full details. Note: This is a ONE-TIME COMMITMENT, not an on-going correspondence with a pen-pal. (But you could add it to your resume as a publication credit.)
