Subject: [NIFL-TECHNOLOGY:759] Introduction of new list moderator

Hi,

With many thanks to Chris Hopey and other staff members at NCAL who
facilitated the NIFL-Technology list for the past two years, I would like to
take this opportunity to introduce the new NIFL-Technology list moderator,
Emily Hacker, Director of Instructional Technology at Literacy Assistance
Center in New York. Emily's expertise in instructional technology and her
training background will ensure the continuity of the list and will add to
the richness of the discussion. Below you will find her introductory
message to the list.

Jaleh Behroozi Soroui
LINCS Director
National Institute for Literacy
======
Hello technology list. When Jaleh asked me to come on board as the new list
moderator I was very excited and honored. This is one of the most active and
interesting listserv communities that I've been a member of. In my new role
as moderator I will do my best to connect you to the kind of resources and
information that you're looking for to help in your efforts to infuse
technology into literacy services. I'll also alert you to policy issues,
funding opportunities, conferences and other related professional
development opportunities and publications.

Here's a little of my background to help give you a sense of where I'm
coming from. I am currently the Director if Instructional Technology at the
Literacy Assistance Center <http://www.lacnyc.org/> (LAC), where I've
worked for six years. Before that I worked as an ESOL teacher in NYC in
various adult literacy programs. I became committed to exploring and
developing technological resources for adult learners and adult literacy
teachers when I saw how motivated and empowered my beginning level ESOL
students became once regular trips to a tiny computer lab were added to the
curriculum.

In my work at the LAC I've focused on developing professional development
resources, like the recently published Surfing for Substance: a professional
development guide to integrating the world wide web into adult literacy
instruction <http://easternlincs.worlded.org/teachers/surfing/index.htm> ,
available in print from the LAC and online at Eastern LINCS. Jana Sladkova,
Instructional Technology Specialist, and I have also developed many
web-based lesson plans and online workshop materials that are available in
the Instructional Technology
<http://www.lacnyc.org/resources/instructional.htm> area of the LAC web
site.

This is actually a transitional time for me, professionally. After six very
rewarding years, I will be leaving the LAC at the end of December. In
January I will begin a new role as the Instructional Technologist for the
Bank Street College of Education <http://www.bankstreet.edu/> . This change
will not effect my listserv role, however, which I will continue to do in
association with the LAC.

I look forward to getting to know you over the next several months. Please
let me know how I can best meet your needs.

Emily Hacker
Director of Instructional Technology
