Emily,
As Director of North Country Adult Educators Consortium in northern New York
State, and in conjunction with our regional Teacher Center, for the past six
years we have organized a technology day on the first Saturday in May. We
have gathered together trainers and technology instructors to provide 18-24
workshops focused on using technology in the classroom. Every year we have
had from 60 -100+ teachers enroll. We have provided training in various
software programs, Windows, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, desktop
publishing, multimedia, assistive devices, Internet, web design, HTML,
various specifc instructional software. These workshops serve as an
introductory basis for many teachers and then we follow-up during the course
of the school year or summer with opportunities fror more intensive specific
training. We arrange for as many of the sessions as possible to be totally
hands on in computer labs - they are generally 1/2 day or full day sessions.
We utilize all of the computer labs in our community - at North Country
Community college, Paul Smiths College, the local high school, middle school,
elementary school, and parochial schools. We also have utilized the local
library. It is a logistical challenge but response is always most rewarding
and we have also included members of the community. It has been a good way to
link teachers with local business and community members on integrating
technology and education.
Every year participants ask for more. Some want basic levels - others want
increasingly advanced skill building. It is difficult to sort it all out and
I am interested in the plans for the Web Camp to see if it might serve as an
example of a way this activity in our region can become more focused.
Thanks,
Chrys Dudbridge
Director
North Country Adult Educators Consortium
