The Director provides the vision and management needed to guide the LAC in its leadership role in helping adult literacy, after-school and employment training centers thoughtfully integrate technology throughout their programming. We are seeking a senior-level educator/manager to join the leadership team of the Literacy Assistance Center, a hub of professional development and information for adult and youth literacy services in New York City and, on a more limited basis, throughout the northeast. Our professional development activities in instructional technology have a dual focus - developing the expertise of literacy educators in using technology as a tool for instruction, management, collaboration and research, and building understanding among literacy educators of critical equity, access and information issues surrounding technology and education. Each year, we provide training and instructional resources to over 400 adult and youth literacy practitioners, who in turn serve almost 20,000 students. Our Instructional Technology Program includes a growing emphasis on on-line professional development opportunities via the LAC web site, www.lacnyc.org. Other emerging areas include Distance Learning and assistive technologies. Highly qualified candidates will possess a demonstrated ability to: · develop and implement an organizational vision and formulate effective program strategies; · evaluate current and emerging technologies and assess their potential as literacy teaching and learning tools; · creatively manage and motivate staff; · plan, prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously; · represent the LAC with public officials and private funders, as well as in local and national conferences, consortia and task forces; · design and facilitate high-quality hands-on professional development activities integrating the Internet, multimedia authoring tools, basic office software suites and educational software; · develop grant proposals; and · write and communicate effectively about technology with both computer novices and "techies." We are looking for a Director of Instructional Technology who approaches problem-solving creatively and thrives in a fast-paced, hard-working, culturally diverse work environment. A good sense of humor is also very helpful. The LAC is an independent, nonprofit agency with 26 staff members and an annual budget of $2.7 million. Established in 1983 to support and promote the expansion of effective literacy services for adults and youth in New York, the LAC works with more than 500 literacy, employment training and adult and youth education programs each year. These services ultimately benefit tens of thousands of literacy students in all five boroughs and almost every neighborhood of the City and throughout the region. Our programming is sponsored by the New York City Adult Literacy Initiative and other public, private and non-profit organizations and grantmakers.
