How about having them write up some simple user directions after looking at
a product in the interview waiting area, and maybe making a short
presentation as if the interviewers were learners about to use the program?

Subject: [NIFL-TECHNOLOGY:923] teacher assessment

Hi everyone,

We are beginning a distance learning project in which participants will
receive
a computer in their homes for six months, and will work with a teacher (both
in-person and on-line) around an adult education curriculum. The
participants
are women who have recently come off of welfare and found jobs, and the
teachers
will be employed by one of several literacy agencies in Philadelphia.
Before
the teachers begin working with the participants, they will receive training
for
using technology in an educational setting. Likewise, before the
participants
take their computers home they must complete a six week orientation in the
computer lab.

We are about to begin interviewing and hiring the teachers for the project.
We
will be looking for strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well
as a
background in adult education. However, we are also looking for some way to
assess the potential teachers around technology.

Can anyone recommend resources or tools for assessing the technology skills
of
these teachers? What are some tasks that we might ask these teachers to
perform
on a computer, as a part of the interview process?

Thanks for any help or suggestions you might have!

faith
