 Hello List:

I am leaving tomorrow morning for Atlanta to attend and present at the
National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) and will be away through
next Tuesday. In the interim, I have asked my colleague, Venu Thelakkat, the
Director of ALIES and Data Analysis at the Literacy Assistance Center, to
facilitate a discussion with the list on developing and using data analysis
software in adult literacy programs.

ALIES 2000 -- a database application designed for adult literacy programs
and developed by the LAC's ALIES/Data Analysis Unit-- allows program
administrators to manage student and class information for myriad purposes.
Based in Microsoft Access, ALIES 2000 gives programs the tools to track and
report program and student activity, and strengthen fundraising efforts.

Some of the questions Venu may address include, why is tracking student and
program infomation valuable? What are some ways all this information can be
useful beyond meeting the needs of contracts and funders? What are essential
elements in a student/program data analysis program? How can programs
evaluate existing products? What is involved in planning and setting up a
data collection system? Over the next few days, Venu will be available to address
your interests and questions on any of these areas and any others you come up with.

Best,

Emily
