Hi Faith,
Surely, you have heard from people more currently in the loop. (I'm a former
adult ed director; although not currently working, it's still my "second love" so
I continue NIFL subscriptions, etc.) Here are a few of my thoughts:
Perhaps the learner who inquired about internet study may be looking for
non-traditional ways of obtaining his/her GED? Cambridge, who produced many GED
study materials in print, also has (had) one designed for computer. I suspect
other companies have followed suit, so you could find these in catalogs or contact
those vendors (publishers) that market GED materials----- Cambridge, Steck-Vaughn,
etc. These would be means of STUDY, PREPARATION, and PRE-TESTING. Also, KET (a
company out of Kentucky, I think) is one source which produced a video series
which some people referred to as "GED on TV". For independently-driven students,
the series is helpful in clarifying confusing points. The series is certainly not
a basic remedial course; in fact, students have to be pretty high-level for it to
be helpful.
Regardless of the means of study, unless the rules have changed, actual final
tests would have to be administered through a site approved by your state testing
center. Good luck! I'll be interested too, as I hope to tutor or work in some
aspect of adult ed as soon as my back behaves! Good luck in receiving more
current suggestions than mine probably are!
Sincerely, Denna Weber
(Former ABE Director & Consultant for CO Dept. of Ed)
