Mary:

Having reviewed educational software for years -- I am always looking for
evaluation forms and tools that can make the job easier and more useful.
Years ago, the Adult Literacy & Technology (ALT) project and Adult Basic
Skills Tech Project developed a software review form --and it is basically
the one used by Northwest Regional Literacy Resource Center for their
Software Buyer's Guide. I'm not sure they still publish the Guide (which
contains a copy of the form) but you could check with them in Seattle
(206-587-3880).

In evaluating software for the LVA - Verizon Family Literacy & Technology
Project, I selected criteria and developed a form -- using suggestions from
the U.S. Congress -- Office of Technology Assessment (OTA)'s publication:
Power On (1988). OTA's "Characteristics Considered in Evaluating Educational
Software" is still the most comprehensive list available and it's easy to
select criteria from their list that meet your agency's needs --and create a
"Yes, No, N/A" or similar type of checklist. While OTA is no longer in
business -- you can download a pdf file of Power On/ Characteristics
Considered" at:

www.wws.princeton.edu:80/~ota/

Go to OTA Publications -- Power On -- and you'll see a contents list.

Best regards,

Chip
