I have used several free providers and tested them against a for fee service (AOL) and found that the service (speed and ease of use) were actually a lot better.  Advertisement tended to be about the same or less depending on the provider.  Unfortunately two of the best are no longer in service.  However, I know many people who use a variety of the free providers by choice, not because they must.
