New AOL Time Warner Foundation Established;
Company Plans Initiatives for 21st Century Literacy, Digital
Opportunity, the Arts and Community Engagement
DATELINE: NEW YORK, Jan. 12
BODY:
AOL Time Warner Inc. today announced the establishment
of the AOL Time Warner Foundation. The mission of the
Foundation is to use the power of media, communications
and information technology to serve the public interest and
strengthen society. Through the Foundation and its
programs and initiatives, both domestic and international,
AOL Time Warner is committed to serving the public interest
by using its unique resources to enrich people's lives and
strengthen communities around the world.
Envisioned as a new kind of foundation for a new century,
and as a model for corporate foundations for the future, the
AOL Time Warner Foundation will focus its efforts on and
will partner with others to build innovative and sustainable
programs in four priority areas: Equipping Children for a
Better Future; Extending Internet Benefits to All; Engaging
Communities in the Arts; and Empowering Citizens and Civic
Participation.
Steve Case, Chairman of AOL Time Warner, will serve as
Chairman of the Board of the AOL Time Warner Foundation.
Kathy Bushkin, a Senior Vice President of AOL Time Warner,
will serve as President of the AOL Time Warner Foundation.
The Foundation's Web site, launched today, is found at
http://www.aoltwfoundation.org.
Building on the companies' prior work in the areas of
education, literacy, the digital divide, philanthropy and the
arts, the new Foundation takes to the next level the
aggressive and innovative path begun by the AOL
Foundation in building an interactive medium that serves the
interests of society.
Steve Case said: "We are proud to announce the
formation of the AOL Time Warner Foundation because it
will underscore and amplify the values and passion that we
are bringing to our efforts to build the world's most respected
and valued company. In our corporate life and culture, it will
help us promote an ethic of volunteerism and civic
engagement. In our role as a leader in our industries, it will
help address critical questions of public policy to ensure that
everyone can share in the benefits of the Internet
Revolution. And it will build on the company's record of
innovation by furthering our engagement in our community
life."
Jerry Levin, Chief Executive Officer of AOL Time Warner,
said: "As a company, we are committed not only to
providing the highest quality products and services, but to
acting with integrity, contributing to the common good and
operating in the public interest. These responsibilities are
the essence of corporate citizenship in the 21st Century --
and at the heart of the work of the AOL Time Warner
Foundation."
Kathy Bushkin added: "AOL Time Warner and the AOL
Time Warner Foundation are built on the premise of adding
value to people's lives. As a company and as a foundation,
we will focus our attention on the areas where our expertise
can have the greatest impact. We will engage the full range
of AOL Time Warner's unique capacities and committed
employees to make a difference in all of our communities."
The Foundation's first major new initiatives -- focusing on
21st Century literacy -- will merge Time Warner's commitment
to literacy with AOL's commitment to access to technology,
and will be unveiled in the coming months.
The AOL Time Warner Foundation's board will be
announced later this month and will be comprised of senior
executives from across the company and its divisions. The
new Foundation merges and succeeds both the AOL
Foundation and the Time Warner Foundation.
