***** IESpeakster, This was a free download from PCWorld.
IE Speakster
After hours of straining your eyes looking at your flickering monitor,
you may be wanting some relief. This program gives it to you, in the
form of a little blue Merlin-like character. This free add-on to users
of Internet Explorer 4 or higher reads Web pages to you when you
right-click and select IE Speakster. If you want only specific text
read, you just highlight that portion. The character will vanish after
the page is spoken, or when you right-click on the character and
command it to stop.

*****Babylon
This utility translates English text into another language. It
features an instant-messaging-style interface and works in any Windows
application. Highlight a word, and the program will give its
equivalent in the other language. If you have Microsoft text-to-speech
installed, you can hear the highlighted word. Translate from English
to Chinese simplified, Chinese traditional, Dutch, French, German,
Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, or Swedish. If you'd
like to remove the ads, as well as receive free upgrades for a year,
the Pro version is $19.95.

Hello Brian,

For basic literacy learners you might try WordAloud. This software was
originally designed to make text files and web pages accessible to people
with a visual impairment or dyslexia and no computer or keyboard skills,
at an affordable price. It was adapted to make it suitable both for
teaching
students to read English (including ESL) and for learning to read English
by oneself, regardless of age. You can improve your reading skills,
regardless of your existing reading ability - in fact WordAloud can
be used for rapid reading (at up to 500 wpm in the evaluation version).
Try it!

There is currently an offer of $29.95 for a personal copy, and $59.90
for a school or other educational site.

An evaluation version is available at www.wordaloud.co.uk

Regards,

John Nissen, director Cloudworld Ltd.

Hi, my name is Brian Anderson and I work at the Madison (Wisconsin)
Area Literacy Council. Our organization has a learning lab with
Rosetta Stone and *New Oxford Picture Dictionary* software that aims
to boost the skills of ESL learners. Frequent users gain many
language benefits from using computers--not to mention elementary
computer skills they learn are a bonus.

But here is my question: Can anyone advise me on software that can
help basic literacy learners? We have a little grant money to spend
on the lab and would like to find something specifically geared to
help people who want to learn to read and write. Most of our learners
are at a fifth-grade reading level or lower. Any knowledge you
have to share would be very welcome. Thanks very much.
Sincerely,
Brian Anderson, Education Director
