He finds that the students are "transfixed" by having the text on his web site spoken to them by a speech synthesiser! Moreover it is invaluable for the couple of dyslexic students in his class who would have great difficulty reading from the white board on which the web pages are projected. BTW, the dyslexic students take material home to mug up for their exams, with WordAloud reading it to them aloud. WordAloud has been designed to be used at all ages, from pre-school to post-retirement. We have recently added a "wordlist" facility to allow users to collect a list of the words that they find difficult. While the user reads through a piece of text silently, they can click on any word to hear it spoken, and the word is automatically added to the list. After a session, student and teacher can review the list, using WordAloud again if they like, and see how many words have been remembered. A number of teachers have said the wordlist facility will be valuable in the teaching of literacy skills. But students can also improve reading by themselves, and self-paced. And now we've just added a clipboard facility, so you can highlight text in a browser, word processor or any other application, and have the words spoken and displayed by WordAloud. Keith says he will find this extremely useful for his teaching, especially when browsing the web in class. A free evaluation copy of WordAloud can be downloaded from www.wordaloud.co.uk.
