You could apply that with WordAloud, so that students start with the speech on, e.g. to listen to a story, and then turn off the sound to concentrate on reading. Actually WordAloud has a half-way-house, where the sound is off except when the student is stuck on a word, when they can click on it to hear it spoken. When in "collect" mode, the clicked-on words are put on a list, so that the student can revise them later, and so that the teacher can monitor progress. On the other subject, of grabbing attention in class, WordAloud has been used very successfully in web-based teaching. The teacher uses an LCD projector and interactive whiteboard. WordAloud is used to read the text on the web pages. This not only enables dyslexics and students with low vision to keep up in class, but apparently "transfixes" all the students, such that they really concentrate on the material, and absorb the material. The multimodality seems to reinforce the learning experience. You can download a free evaluation copy from www.wordaloud.co.uk.
