Here a list to keep handy when facing some computer/IT related challenges:

BASIC TECHNIQUES:
1. Take a deep breath, relax and always remember, it's just a stupid
computer-a machine-a piece of equipment-and you are smarter than it is.

2. Look on the manufacturer's website. Often there is information to assist
in identifying the source of a problem and possible solutions.

3. If you make any changes in trying to fix the problem, make a note of the
specific changes you made so that you can (a) change it back if it doesn't
help [or if it gets worse] and (b) tell the help desk, if you call them,
what precisely you changed.

4. Refer to the owner's manual or if applicable, call the technical support
division of the manufacturer or help desk.
.,.,.,.,.,.,
SEVERAL KEY POINTS
-One thing to consider is that since many software packages and operating
systems, and hardware are made by Microsoft, sometimes your system will
malfunction if something is not compatible with Microsoft products. This
should be easily remedied as the owner's manuals will give you information
on this.

-Have you downloaded new updates? If not, this could be why your system is
not working properly. Hardware and software often makes changes to keep
up-to-date and you should regularly visit the respective websites for such
updates. For instance, if you have the Norton Antivirus Software installed
on your system, did you know that you are able to download free updates to
the software? As a new virus is created, the antivirus software you have
will not work if you don't download the updates. Also, your hardware
manufacturer will often provide updates that you can download to help your
system continue to run smoothly. This is called a DRIVER update, which is
essential to the smooth operation of your computer. Most will provide an
icon or a button someplace on your system, or perhaps listed under PROGRAMS
from your Start Menu that will take you right there.

-Sometimes if something doesn't work right, the error message that follows
will often give you information that can help you. Even if it cannot help
you, make a note of the error message, verbatim, so that you can provide
this to a technician that you may talk to.

-When upgrading operating systems, (i.e., Windows 95 to Windows 98 OR
Windows 98 to Windows ME or Windows XP) you may discover that something has
stopped working and isn't functioning properly. Making sure you have
downloaded driver updates to your hardware is a good start. You can also do
a windows update may also be a good route to take go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ then click the button SCAN FOR UPDATES
and then click the button DRIVER UPDATES and then a scan of your system will
begin to determine what you have installed and what may be missing and you
can download the needed items. You should still, in addition to this, check
with your manufacturer to see if there are driver updates available there as
well. When searching for drivers on your hardware's manufacturer website,
look for a symbol or statement indicating that it has passed the
compatibility standards of Microsoft. This is particularly important when
you are using the Windows XP operating system. If you attempt to download a
driver that is NOT compatible, you may get an error message indicating such
but even if you don't, your system still won't run properly.

-What if your printer stops working? Check your cables. You'd be surprised
how a cable could come loose. Maybe your foot pulled it inadvertently, or
if you have children or pets, they could have worked it loose. Also, if
there was an electrical storm, even if you have a surge protector, this
could have caused some information to be lost and you may need to re-install
the printer you are using under the ADD PRINTERS function. Also, some
printers go offline following a storm and depending on the type of printer
you have, you may need to align it or calibrate it (the term differs from
one system to the next). Also, check your toner cartridge. Many printers
will let you know that the ink is low, but some will simply stop working and
it's up to the user to figure out what's wrong.

-There is also a free bulletin board available for end-users where people
with computer-related issues post their concerns and others with the same
kinds of issues will answer and give you advice and suggestions
(http://www.talk21.org/support/).

These little tips should help you solve most of the problems yourself. Good
Luck.

Will Saunders

Susan,

This may sound to simple, however, it works a good percentage of the time
simply turning things of and on will clear the problem.

As being told I will be the new technology coordinator
for my school, I am trying to develop a list of things
that may help in troubleshooting problems with
computers and printers.
