I hope that you will take a look at A Day in the Life... for both 
instruction and assessment.  While we developed it at Penn State's 
Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy, it is distributed by 
Curriculum Associates 
(http://www.curriculumassociates.com/publications/adil.shtml). 
Intended for pre-GED adult and adolescent students, the software 
simulates job tasks in the customer service, retail, health care, 
maintenance, food service, and clerical areas, requiring students to 
use necessary literacy skills to accomplish the job tasks in each 
area.  It not only teaches essential literacy skills, but reinforces 
the importance of literacy for performing jobs in the workplace.
