My first thoughts are to try on-line English language periodicals designed for new readers, and useful for new language learners: The Key http://www.keynews.org/ and Learning Edge http://thewclc.ca/edge/ Not available as an on-line document is "News for You" another periodical designed for the new reader that is published by New Readers Press http://www.news-for-you.com/teachers/index.html If you are going to be using a Spanish language paper, perhaps you could think of it in the framework of media literacy and do some comparison exercises of how the same news item is reported differently in different newspapers or through different newssources. So students could discuss what they know about the debate about a U.S. preemptive strike on Iraq (for example) read articles published in a Spanish language paper, a mainstream American English language paper (or on a mainstream American English language TV news source which might be desirable as a listening and comprehension exercise) and a foreign English Language news source (like BBC on-line which as audio and video features) Students could discuss the nuances in coverage and perspective and report back on their findings.
