You can buy a good one for $100 and a cheap one for 50-70. Scanning text and transparencies depends more on the software than the scanner. I have yet to find really good OCR software. Scanning photos and scanning text as a picture are great. The difficulties aris in the Optical Character Reader (OCR), but don't let it stop you from getting one. We use a cheap one in our Family Programan and the parents and children have had great fun creating stories from family pictures and photos of our activities.
