Subject: [NIFL-TECHNOLOGY:2814] writing ideas - writing about pet peeves
hi nifl-techology people -
here's a writing idea that might be useful. all of us have pet
peeves about things that ought to be changed or improved in this
world. writing something short and sweet about a pet peeve can be
therapeutic -- as well as creating hope that the pet peeve will be
somehow addressed if the writing is communicated in the right way to
the right person.
here's an example of a short "pet peeve" writing i did over the
weekend. feel free to distribute or use in any way you like. an mp3
audio version of this same writing can be downloaded from
http://storymakers.net/moviesonbusesmp3.zip and may be also be
freely distributed. the mp3 file is about 500 kilobytes and fits on a
floppy disk. any computer from about 1997 onwards ought to be able to
play mp3 audio files.
hope this helps,

btw, mp3 audio files can also be played on portable mp3 players.
it's possible to fit as much as 35 hours of mp3 audio files (of the
kind recorded above) on a single cd that would play in a portable mp3
player. the blank cd media is very inexpensive these days and i'd be
interested in working with others to create 35 hours (or perhaps just
5 or 10 hours) of freely distributable fiction and nonfiction for
adult learners to listen and learn from.

Movies on Intercity Buses - Simply a Bad Idea
Whenever I take a bus from one city to another, what I like most
about the experience is looking out the window at the passing
countryside and taking a snooze whenever I feel like it. Bus rides
used to be a time for relaxation and contemplation. No more. Movies
on buses have shattered the peace.
Whether you want to view the movie or not, movies on buses now blare
at you from small television screens hanging down from the luggage
racks. If an actor shrieks in the movie, it's difficult to ignore it.
If the movie includes explosions, these will be exploding right in
your face, whether you want it or not.
If the movie is a thriller with a high-tension soundtrack, you'll be
listening to that scary soundtrack whether you want to or not.
Movies on buses are one of the worst inventions ever imagined.
In-your-face movies rob people of sleep and disturb the peace.
There is a simple solution to this problem, though. Before every bus
ride the bus driver could ask the riders if they wanted to see a
movie, explaining that some people prefer a quiet bus ride. If fewer
than 50 percent of the people on the bus raise their hands, than the
bus driver would not start the movie.
An even better solution would be to stop showing movies on buses altogether.
If movies continue to be shown on intercity buses, these buses may
lose riders to alternate forms of transportation. That would be a
real shame, because taking a nice long bus ride is one of life's
simple pleasures.
