Hello Everyone ...

Kevin, thanks for the nice introduction ....

Yes, Janet, over the past 3 years SABES in Massachusetts
has been trying to incorporate video-conferencing into many
of our Professional Development events and meetings. Like
many other projects it has had successes and pitfalls.

Videoconferencing comes in a number of flavors. Most of our
experience is with group meeings scheduled simultaneously
in Community Colleges throughout the state. Most campuses
use a technology or product called Picture-Tel - or Pictel that
uses ISDN lines as their backbone. The physical arrangements
vary but most can accommodate 15 to 20 participants at a site
and usually have other hightech toys available such as document
viewers and interactive whiteboards. This equipment and telephone
/ infrastructure charges can be rather expensive and not within the
budgets of most ABE programs, hence the piggy-backing on
Community College facilities when they are available.

We have also begun to explore meeting via individual webcams
on office PCs which is much more cost effective but there are
many security issues that have to be resolved before this becomes
a useful practice.

Please feel free to contact me for further information, other resources
and useful anecdotes for your TECH21 Project.

Massachusetts DOE has been exploring Distance Learning through several pilot sites, and there
are a number of other DL programs in the state. Happily, some of this expertise has ended up
in SABES. Erica Walsh used to work w/ SABES in the western part of the state, although she has
moved on to another company now. Try them @ www.SABES.org

> As part of the TECH21 project, we are looking into uses of videoconferencing for professional
development with adult education teachers. If you are involved in videoconference PD or know of
a program that has used it, please let me know so that I can followup. I'm happy to summarize
the information for the group.
