The upcoming presidential election may stimulate interest in this topic for students and educators. There are certainly many resources to share on this topic. What technology based resources are you using with learners? Many of the resources out there are not designed with adult new-readers or English language learners in mind, please share your strategies for using your resources of choice with learners. What do those resources offer in terms of their distinct functionality (an interactive web-based resource for example, video that is accessible even to new-readers) that you find useful and most effective? Following is a message from Eliza Licht at P.O.V., PBS's excellent documentary film affiliate, and an election year resource on voting that may be of value to you. The home page for this resource is: http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2004/election/index.html Of interest is their "Talking Back" feature that offers a short digital video of people discussing the importance of voting, and what is influencing their vote this election year. It may be useful in initiating classroom discussion and writing on this topic. Best regards, Mariann >From Eliza Licht: I wanted to let you know about two exciting new resources on our website. The first is our Why Vote? website, you should check out the entire site but I wanted to specifically draw your attention to the Democracy in Action Project page. http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2004/election/res/res_povce.html Campuses across the country have applied to hold screenings of these films as part of their Election 2004 activities. Some schools are holding all day film series on election day, while others are screening one or two in the upcoming weeks to motivate students to vote. If you are interested in holding a screening, just hit the application at the bottom of the site. For those of you who teach high school, you may be interested in using the "I'm not old enough to vote but if I was..." lesson plan on the for educators page. The second page I wanted to tell you about was our Engagement Campaigns site. There you can apply to hold screenings and download guides. www.pbs.org/pov/outreach/ I would also love to hear from you. Tell me why you downloaded the guide and if you used it. We will be creating a more formal feedback tool--but any feedback is useful. If you want off of this list, just let me know. Thanks so much and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!
