Hi literacy IT folk,

We [CAE Press at the Centre for Adult Education (CAE) in Australia] have just published a book about using the internet in adult literacy classes. Should be of interest to lots of literacy and ESL teachers using, or thinking of using, the Internet with their learners. It's called "A real i opener". A description is below.

The book is now available, and there is a special Introductory price available until the end of February. The price is $24.75 in Aussie dollars (approx $US19.00 plus postage). Hope you can pass on the information to interested teachers and tutors.

A real i opener: Use of the internet by adults with low levels of literacy by Jan Hagston
A real i opener is an important resource for anyone using, or intending to use, the Internet with their literacy learners. It documents the outcomes and findings from an action research project that looked at how four different groups of adult literacy students used the Internet in their learning. The research suggests that the use of the Internet in literacy education should be supported and encouraged for a range of reasons, perhaps the most important being that it provides both a medium to practise and develop literacy skills as well as a reason for doing so.

A real i opener describes each of the case studies and includes reports and analysis of both teacher and student actions, reactions and outcomes and frames it within a theoretical perspective. Issues and critical factors about using the Internet with literacy learners are addressed, along with the benefits and challenges to both teachers and learners. There are descriptions of classroom activities and worksheets, and listings of useful websites.
