I think it's important to note a possible 5th practice or perhaps a
modification of one of the other four.

5. Computers are used by both teachers and students in a variety of
ways. (Teachers using computers to prepare materials, find information
rapidly on the Internet to be shared with students, or to arrange
cooperative lessons with teachers in other locations. Students using
commercially-purchased CDROM or network-based software, communicating
via email with other students or native speakers, using common word
processing or other software to complete projects, finding information
on the Internet, accessing ESL or other sites on the Internet, or any
one of a number of other activities and with the possibility that all or
many of these activities can be done or are being done simultaneously)

I'm a newcomer to the discussion having been informed of it only today
and it is an extremely pertinent topic. I'm wondering why the need to
"wrap up" the first segment so quickly!

Thank you for letting me add my two cents...

Wrap-up for Question 1

Mariann and all,

I'd like to wrap-up the first segment of our 5 part
discussion by acknowledging that the practices
described by the list participants align with - and
significantly enrich - the four practices consistently
identified in the research as indicators of
seamlessness.

1- Learners access computers as easily as they access
more traditional learning tools - such as paper and
pencil
2- Computer use is routinely augmented by class
discussion
3- Computers are used in combination with other
learning formats - such as lectures and books
4- Computers are used to enhance other learning
activities.

I will be posting the second question shortly and look
forward to continued discussion.
Thanks,
Liz
