Mariann and all,

In our discussion last week, we tried to understand
WHAT computer technology integration (CTI) was - and
identify best practices that describe HOW to integrate
(the first 4 questions of this discussion).

We are now going to shift the discussion to an
examination of WHY some teachers so effectively
integrate technology, while others use computers in
limited ways – if at all?

One of the significant findings of the study under
discussion was that “Compatibility" was the largest
predictor of CTI among teachers surveyed.
Compatibility” refers to instructors’ beliefs about
whether or not using computer technology for
instruction aligns with their personal teaching style
and their understanding of how adults learn.

Earlier, we talked about technical glitches that
hinder the integration of technology. Are there
pedagogical “glitches” that hinder its effective use
also?
Your responses have significant importance for our
field, and so I really look forward to gathering your
collective wisdom on the aspect of "Compatibility."
Here are a few questions to start us off.

Does CTI necessitate a change in the WAY you teach?

Does CTI necessitate a change in the way you PREPARE
to teach your classes?

Does CTI support what you believe about the way adults
learn?

Does CTI facilitate the measurement of learner and
program outcomes and objectives?

Have you ever observed resistance to technology that
reflects a
mismatch between an instructor's pedagogical
perspective and the use
of computers?

Can you describe a technology training you
attended/provided that focused on instructors’ needs
(program objectives, institutional expectations, etc)
- rather than on the technology itself? Can you
describe that training?

Thanks,
Liz
