Steve thanks for bringing the web quest to our attention. It looks like a
great way to engage learners on this important issue.
Doea anyone else on the list have technology based instructional resources
they can share that address current issues inthe news, in our lives?
Following are a couple that may be useful for engaging students on the
topic of the Social Security debate.

Part of the PBS teacher collection, provides a brief history of Social
Security and of the current debate. The level of the text seems appropriate
for BE and ESOL students:

CNN: "Social Security: How would you fare? What you're promised today; what
you might get if reform goes through." 
This resource provides some graphics that show what the proposed changes
might mean to people at different income levels. This might make for some
interesting GED math lessons:
