"If anyone on the NIFL-Technology list knows of ABE (including ESL/ESOL)

research on using technology-based instruction as a supplement to
classroom-based instruction, please let us know about it." <

The Journal of Research on Technology in Education's Winter 2004 - 2005 edition published an article on the effect of Merit Software's reading products as a supplement to classroom-based instruction.

The research showed that the treatment group students improved their reading and vocabulary scores by 10.5 to 13% compared to the control group.

Although the study was performed was with middle school students, Merit Software is commonly used by teachers to help ABE, GED and ESL students.

To my knowledge this is the only peer-reviewed, control v treatment group, research to have been published on the matter of improving reading comprehension with any type of student.

Here is a link to information about the study http://www.meritsoftware.com/news/jrte.html.

The complete study can be read through this link http://www.meritsoftware.com/jrte_vol37_n2_merit.pdf
