I am not sure the ALE Wiki is the right venue for student collaborative writing, but wikis definitely are, and it is possible for teachers to create collaborative writing wiki pages on the Literacy tent, which houses the ALE Wiki. I also know that at least one of the LINCS regional centers is exploring offering wikipages for teachers and students to use in collaborative writing and for other purposes. I have the same question Maria posed: does anyone know of good guidelines, templates, or online examples for student collaborative writing using a blog, wiki, Yahoo group or other web-based collaborative writing environment?
