hi nifl-technology people -

last week i helped an adult learner in washington dc create this
short web multimedia presentation using powerbullet, a free
program for windows.
 http://www.his.com/~pshapiro/mycomputersaga.htm

powerbullet presenter lets you to do incredible digital storytelling
on the web.
(you can download it from http://www.powerbullet.com)

you can mix text, graphics (i.e. photos) and mp3 audio into flash
slideshows. the program is quite easy to learn. it automatically
creates the navigational arrows at the bottom of each slideshow
screen.

what i like best about the flash format is that it can be viewed and
heard by macintosh, windows and linux computers. also, flash
slideshows tend to viewable by people with dial-up internet access.

powerbullet has text animation features i haven't explored yet.

in the above presentation, we recorded the audio in one
sentence segments using the free Audacity program.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net we copied and pasted the
one sentence audio pieces into two larger audio segments.

we then compressed the audio into mp3 format using itunes.

coincidentally, the creator of powerbullet presenter heard that
i've been saying favorable
things about this software on the web and has offered me 20 licences for
powerbullet presenter plus, the commercial version of powerbullet.
powerbullet presenter plus has a few extra features that powerbullet
doesn't have. i haven't explored powerbullet presenter plus, so i'm
sorry i can't explain about the extra features.

i'd like to pass some of these licences along to any literacy
organizations doing digital storytelling.

if you'd like a license for powerbullet presenter plus, please
send me a short email telling me about the digital storytelling
your organization is doing (or wants to do.)

i'd like to thank david rosen for encouraging the use of digital
storytelling on the web by adult learners. a long time ago he
sent me a very encouraging email regarding the following
presentation -
http://www.writersforliteracy.org/fannielouhamer2.mov

i converted this presentation from simplecard format to quicktime
format so that it can be seen by a wider audience. simplecard was
a fantastic macintosh program (for mac os 7 and 8.) it was never
updated for mac os 9 and mac os x, but still works very nicely on
older macs. it's not as easy to use as powerbullet, but still has
merit.

          see http://www.his.com/pshapiro/simplecard.html

i recommend that all literacy activists set up an account on
