Holly and others,
I have also had difficulty with a wiki within a Moodle site, but no
difficulties with independent wiki sites. Although I prefer those
which use wikimedia software, I have used wikis based on other
software, too, without difficulty.
One caution: a wiki is not a good idea if you want a group of people,
e.g. students, to all work on the same page at the same time each
from a different computer. This creates enormous confusion and
frustration. A wiki is terrific if everyone is working from a
different computer, each on a _different_ page, or if as a group they
are working on one page with one computer and a multimedia
projector. A wiki can also be useful if you have two classes --
separated by distance -- that want to work on the same page
asynchronously. For example, Susan Gaer and I hope to encourage
their use in our 05-06 International Classroom Virtual Visit project
where we match up classes of students (adult and K-12) across the
world so they can "meet" each other and talk about topics of mutual
interest.
I would be delighted if you, and other members of this list would try
out the Writing Together wiki at
http://seedwiki.com/wiki/writing_together
