This topic has come up in response to the growing sense of political division in our country, Americans' growing appetite for a values-based political discourse, and a sense of needing to examine our social values and their relationship to politics and policies. Goals for this issue: 1.Raise awareness about the importance of social values and encourage discussion about them in adult education classrooms. 2. Help students learn to deconstruct policies to see the values underneath and decide if these are the values they support. 3. Provide some analysis about "values talk" in current political discourse (for example, family values, American or democratic values that we are spreading around the world). 4. Examine the framing of issues by political parties and try to see how that changes our feelings about the issue (for example changing the framing of "tax cut" to "tax relief"). 5. Discuss what social researchers are calling "bridge values" in American society and think about what they mean, how they would be operationalized in society. I am attaching a PDF version of the call for articles. Please note that there are $50 stipends available to adult education students whose work is selected for publication in the next issue. We are looking for submissions AND for people interested in serving on the editorial board for this next issue. If you're interested in being on the board please let me know and I can provide you with all the details about what is involved and what the time commitment is. Thanks for your support of The Change Agent!
