REAL LEARNING
Computer Resource Package
The PORT CARES Educational Resource Centre offers a program entitled Real Learning for Life. The focus of this program is to introduce computers and the basic skills necessary to improve employment readiness and enhance independence and training/education goals, in a small class setting.
Over the last year the Educational Resource has been collecting and adapting technology materials from a wide variety of sources to assist us in preparing our clients to gain the essential skills needed to achieve their goals. Although the information and materials were excellent resources, we felt our learners needed more.
In November 2003 we began the task of developing our own resource materials; learning materials, activities and demonstrations that would meet the needs of our Literacy learners. This project provides learners the opportunity to increase their competencies in the area of technology therefore enhancing their abilities to obtain their goals of independence, training/education and employment. The development and design of the activities and demonstrations (tests) used will compliment the integration of the essential skills into the programming.
This package of materials provides learners a clear understanding and hands-on approach. Materials encompass the following; Basic Computer Operation Skills and Operating System Skills (Windows® XP), Basic Word Processing (Word XP), Basic Computerized Presentation Skills (PowerPoint XP) and Basic Computerized Spreadsheets (Excel).
Real Learning for Life Program fosters an environment of self-management and self-direction. Individuals will be able to work through the material on their own and at their own pace with guidance from an instructor. Individuals at an IALS Level 1 may require more assistance working with the materials.
The package includes: Includes:
1. Manuals to be used with Windows XP, Word XP, Excel XP and PowerPoint
2. Demonstrations to correspond with each manual
3. Answer Keys to correspond with each demonstration
4. Certificate template for each manual
5. Training plan template
6. Permission to photocopy all materials for learners in your agency (one location)
It is my goal that this endeavor will enhance Literacy Basic Skills and Adult Education Programs by providing a model for enhancing technology skills that can easily be adapted into any program. This includes the various streams and sectors. As discussed the design of the material fosters an environment of self-direction and management and therefore creating an opportunity for learners to learn individually, in small groups or in a large group environment. This is a great opportunity for programs to enhance their ability to integrate computers into the learning environment.
Real Learning will help to meet the need for current technology materials for learners of various programs.
Before using, I recommend that the facilitators that will be using the material view the PowerPoint Presentation, to get an overall understanding of the Resource Package.
I trust that you will share in the success that we have shared with our learners.
Regards,
Julie Stuart
P.S. Currently the REAL LEARNING Computer Resource Package is being used by Community-based Adult Literacy/Upgrading Programs, Colleges and School Boards.
