Students are sometimes resistant to the software, and some have trouble for about 10-15 minutes learning to use the space bar or mouse to select and type their responses. The greatest challenge some students have is if they have poor keyboard skills, but the students just "hunt and peck" to do the assignments. Within about a half hour, all students have been absorbed in the assignments, and since there is little typing, the software program becomes a transparent medium rapidly. Even our most anti-technology students will come back the next time asking for Reading Power Modules, and this experience gives them a good sense of accomplishment using a computer. Our educational gains are documented by TABE scores. We retest these students within 4-6 week intervals, and that is where I am getting my information of 2-3 grade levels. When I taught a regular developmental level college reading class here at Yavapai, I was introduced to this program. When used properly, students' reading rates came up 30% in one semester. The comprehension also came up consistently. I cannot say enough good about Reading Power Modules. The interface is old and looks unimpressive, but the students are loving it and are getting great success and feeling of accomplishment from it, and that is what we are all about, right!
