Here, Here! I agree! What we have in Anson's use of the word "normal" is
just one more example of gender hegemony--normalizing the dominant (male)
model of what is and what is not acceptable behavior. Advocating space for
women-only and men-only times for discussion of sexual oppression expresses
what is the fact---men and women through socialization have acquired in many
arenas of their lives different very social experiences and therefore the
evolution of different views as to what is important in their gendered lives.
These differences, and no one can deny that they exist in a patriarchy,
obviate the justification and necessity at certain times for single sex
gatherings and dicussions around problem-solving issues. Violence is
espcially a women's issue, after all much of the violence women encounter is
brought about by men. Men certainly should also address this topic and
should feel compelled to do so in men-only sessions, after all, men would
certainly bring more credibility in advocating its abolition among other men
who feel little to no compunction enacting violence aganst women. Altruism
is certainly appropriate in application to this issue of women-only topics.
This would be the perfect area to implement this practice.
