Here is a preview: Featured Speakers: Nancy Cooper- she focuses on how culture-based curriculum is developed and implemented by Native communities. Elisabeth Hayes-she focuses on adult literacy education and women's learning. Aubra Love-she directs the Black Church and Domestic Violence Project. Dani Lyndersay-she focuses on adult literacy learners in a village in Trinidad. Julia Perilla-she is the coordinator of St. Joseph's Mercy Care "Caminar Latino": A Domestic Violence Intervention for Latino Families. Vanessa Sheared-she focuses on an africentric feminist perspective of race, gender, class, and literacy. Participants and presenters constructing change in the shadow of welfare reform. - Finances, Home ownership, Women and Literacy Some general information: The conference will be held from Monday 1/22-Wednesday 1/24 at Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, The conference is designed to bring together a diverse constituency of practitioners, learners, researchers, and policymakers. This constituency is being brought together to pose problems and develop an understanding of the linkages between women's lives, their culture, and their oral and written literacies. This conference is presented by the Center for the Study of Adult Literacy at Georgia State University, in collaboration with Laubach Literacy Action, and The Centre for Literacy of Quebec. The focus of the conference is: Language, Culture, and Literacy as they relate to women in adult basic education classes and will address the following question: How do language, culture, literacy and women interact in basic literacy, ESL, family literacy, health literacy, workplace literacy, pre GED, and GED classes? Practitioners, Researchers, Learners, and Policy Makers are encouraged to attend. Conference Registration Information: Early registration is $100.
